Orthokeratology contact lenses for adults and children

What is orthokeratology?

These are custom contact lenses for patients with myopia that only have to be worn at night. Once removed in the morning, orthokeratology lenses, also known as ortho-K lenses, provide clear uncorrected vision during the day.

Who is eligible for Ortho-K lenses?

Orthokeratology lenses are a good option for patients with myopia and low amounts of astigmatism. Currently, they are unavailable for patients with hyperopia or presbyopia. Fitting can start as early as 6 or 7 years of age and can continue into adulthood.

How is the fitting process?

Dr. Lingad will first perform a comprehensive eye exam and measure the shape of the eyes using a special instrument called a corneal topographer. The data will be used to create a custom lens for each eye. Once the lenses are received after about 5 days, the patient is asked to return for a fitting as well as an insertion and removal training session. The patient will then be able to go home with the lenses and the fit will be re-evaluated after about 1 week. If there is an issue with the fit or the vision, a modification will be made until clear vision is reached.

Is orthokeratology expensive?

Ortho-k lenses are not covered by insurance. The cost may vary from $1800-$3000 depending on the city you live in and the provider you choose. FSA and HSA funds can be used to cover orthokeratology fits and lenses.

Where can I get fitted for orthokeratology lenses?

Dr. Wilzen Lingad is a certified provider for the Paragon CRT ortho-K contact lenses in Long Island City. As a bonus, ortho-K lenses are also known to slow down the progression of myopia.
